Amazing! Why Can Nianfo Dissolve Countless Karmic Obstacles? | Excerpted from Master Jingben’s Q&A Series
Many people may wonder: How can Nianfo possibly dissolve countless karmic obstacles? The answer is actually simple - because the Buddha’s Name contains immeasurable virtue and boundless merit. When virtue is infinite, it naturally has the power to overcome infinite negative karma.
To understand this, imagine someone asking: How can we eliminate poverty? The most practical and direct way is simply to be truly wealthy. If a person was so rich that he could even buy an entire nation and provide food, shelter, and comfort for all, then poverty would no longer exist. In the same way, to dissolve immeasurable karmic obstacles, one must possess immeasurable virtue. And this is precisely what lies within the Name “Namo Amituofo.” This sacred Name embodies infinite merit, capable of extinguishing all karmic hindrances.
The great master Jiaxiang once said: “Reciting the Buddha’s Name has immeasurable merit; therefore, it eradicates immeasurable sin.” In one short sentence, he revealed the essence of this truth: the virtue within the Buddha’s Name is limitless, and thus it naturally dissolve limitless karmic obstacles.
Similarly, Master Shandao taught: “Regardless of the magnitude of one’s sins or merits, simply recite the Buddha’s Name without any doubt.” In the Pure Land teaching, the weight of our karma has never been the key issue, because the Buddha’s Name itself has the power to dissolve all obstacles. It is like a billionaire who is so wealthy that small amounts of money - whether a few coins or a few hundred dollars - make no difference to him at all. Likewise, since the virtue of the Buddha’s Name is infinite, even beings burdened with deep and heavy karma can be freed by sincerely calling the Name.
For this reason, those who practise Nianfo need not fear the weight of their past transgressions; they only need to fear not believing or not reciting. Those who doubt and hesitate may think themselves wise, yet they lose the greatest treasure of all - the boundless merit of the Buddha’s Name that stands right before them.
May we all completely trust in Amitabha Buddha’s great Vow and wholeheartedly hold fast to His Name. Each recitation dissolves immeasurable karma, and within the embrace of the Buddha’s compassionate Light, liberation in this very life is assured. Namo Amituofo.
