What is “Unconditional Loving-Kindness and Identity-Compassion”?

Question: Master, I would like to ask — what is the meaning of “unconditional loving-kindness and identity-compassion” (无缘大慈,同体大悲)? I don’t quite understand. Kindly request Master’s guidance.

Master Jingben Answers: Namo Amitabha Buddha. Regarding “unconditional loving-kindness and identity-compassion,” here is a simple explanation:

“Unconditional Loving-Kindness” — “Unconditional” means without any conditions, without distinguishing near from far, close from distant. Giving joy to sentient beings requires no condition or causal connection. It is not because you are my relative or friend that I am kind to you; rather, it is equal loving-kindness extended to all beings — without discrimination, without conditions.

“Identity-Compassion” — Taking the suffering of all beings as one’s own, seeing all sentient beings and oneself as one body. Just as when your hand is injured, your whole body feels the pain — Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, seeing any being suffer, feel it as their own suffering. That is why they vow to deliver all sentient beings.

Amitabha Buddha’s 18th Vow is the most perfect expression of “unconditional loving-kindness and identity-compassion.” The 18th Vow states: “If sentient beings of the ten directions, with sincere faith and joy, wish to be born in my land, and call my Name even ten times — should they fail to be born there, may I not attain perfect enlightenment.” Regardless of good or evil, regardless of capacity, all sentient beings of the ten directions — so long as they recite the Name — are equally embraced by Amitabha, who will never forsake a single being. This is the very summit of unconditional loving-kindness and identity-compassion. Namo Amitabha Buddha.
