Is Working in a Prison Considered Bad?
Master Jingben Answers: Namo Amitabha. Being a prison officer is not a bad occupation. In truth, any honest profession, when carried out in accordance with the Dharma, is acceptable — there is no need to worry over it.
Moreover, for those who recite the Buddha-Name, one may recite anywhere — while at work, while walking, in moments of quiet. The Name knows no limitation by place of work.
The ancients said: "Public service offers a fine path for practice — for through it one can benefit many." Your work as a prison officer in fact carries with it a most rare opportunity: those inside the prison are often bearing great suffering of body and mind. You have the chance to introduce them to the path of reciting the Buddha-Name, to encourage them to call this single Name, "Namo Amitabha." For them, this may well be the most important turning point of their lives. Is this not the very finest practice of "having faith oneself and teaching others to believe"?
As to whether to continue in this work, this depends on your own karmic conditions and circumstances — your health, your family, the practicalities of your life. After weighing these factors, make your decision accordingly. If, on reflection, you feel it is truly not suitable, there is no need to feel regret about resigning. If you are able to continue, and can guide others to recite the Name from your post, that is all the more a precious connection.
Whatever you finally decide, please recite the Name with a peaceful heart. Entrust this matter to Amitabha Buddha, and Amitabha will arrange the most suitable conditions for you. Namo Amitabha
