Mosquito Control and Protecting Life — Can We Have Both?

Question: Master, Namo Amitabha. I work at a property management company. Today my supervisor asked me to send out some promotional material encouraging the residents to exterminate mosquitoes, and I refused. May I ask — was I right to do so? Kindly request Master's guidance.

Master Jingben Answers: Namo Amitabha. First, I rejoice in and praise this compassionate heart of yours — one that cannot bear to take life and that is mindful of protecting all beings. To keep beings in mind, thought after thought, even in the midst of your work, is a most rare and most precious heart.

This matter, in fact, may well be handled with skillful means.

The promotion of "mosquito control" is mainly intended to protect the health and hygiene of all the residents — because mosquitoes may spread disease. So its starting point is, in truth, to benefit beings and guard against illness; it is not simply for the sake of killing. Seen in this light, it does not necessarily run counter to compassion.

So what can be done?

You can put a little more thought into the way the message is presented, skillfully emphasizing methods that do not directly take life — such as "keeping the environment clean, with prevention as the priority." In other words, "prevention over treatment." This way, you can be mindful of protecting beings such as mosquitoes while also protecting the residents' health — the best of both worlds, and in fact the more complete approach.

At the same time, you can quietly recite the Name in your heart and dedicate the merit for those mosquito beings, wishing that they may leave suffering and attain joy, and be reborn in the Pure Land. Turn this heart that cannot bear to harm into one recitation after another of "Namo Amitabha."

In this way, the heart of protecting life is fulfilled, and your work is fulfilled too — neither side is neglected. Namo Amitabha
