Do More Nianfo Devices Mean Greater Merit?

Question: Question 1: Compassionate Master Jingben, I would like to ask: at home, playing only one nianfo (Buddha-Name recitation) device in the living room, versus playing four devices at the same time throughout the home (living room, bedroom, study, and kitchen) — is the merit the same for both? Or is the merit greater in the latter case?

Question 2: Also, should the nianfo device be placed up high as much as possible? Is it acceptable to place it on the floor, or beneath a table or chair? With gratitude to Master Jingben.

Master Jingben Answers: Namo Amitabha. Regarding your questions, allow me to explain in two parts:

On the Number of Nianfo Devices and Merit

First, please set your heart at ease: whenever the Name is recited, the merit is perfect and complete. One recitation of the Name is perfect and complete; a million recitations are likewise perfect and complete — this completeness neither increases nor decreases. Therefore, the amount of merit does not depend on how many nianfo devices are played.

A nianfo device is, by nature, an aid — used to help us call the Buddha-Name to mind and to create an environment for recitation. Whether one device or four, the purpose is the same: to let us call to mind, at all times, the heart that recites the Name.

Of course, if your home is more spacious and a single device cannot be heard in other rooms, then placing a few more is perfectly fine. If several play at once and the sounds of the Name overlap, it is best to set each device to the same pace as far as possible — avoid having one fast and another slow, which sounds chaotic. You may even add small speakers so that every area plays in sync; in this way it becomes pure and uniform.

But please do not fall into the discriminating mind of "comparing numbers and calculating how much merit." What matters most, always, is "single-minded, exclusive recitation" — letting us recite the Name continuously. That is what is right.

On the Placement of the Nianfo Device

In truth, whether the position is high or low is not the point. So long as it comes from a heart of reverence — not placing the nianfo device in an unclean spot, or somewhere it may easily be stepped on or treated slightingly (such as directly on the floor where it gets kicked by feet, or piled among clutter) — placing it in a clean and tidy spot is perfectly fine.

In short, take "reverence" and "convenience and comfort" as your principles, and place it according to your own circumstances and conditions. There is no need to fret or be overly rigid about this. Namo Amitabha
