Can Buddhist Practitioners Pray for a Good Job?

Question: Dear Master, as the teaching tells us not to pray for things that are outside of us, how can we pray for a decent job or more business to support this body? Please enlighten us.

Master Jingben Answers: Namo Amitabha. There is in fact no contradiction here — please set your heart at ease.

First, please understand: those who recite the Buddha-Name may certainly aspire for peace and well-being in this present life. Amitabha Buddha's deliverance is not only for the life to come; it embraces both this life and the next. We call this "the twofold benefit — present and future": the benefit of peace and protection in this life, and the benefit of rebirth in the Pure Land in the next. So, to pray for a good job in order to support yourself and your family is entirely in accord with the teaching, not against it.

When the teaching speaks of "not craving things outside oneself," it does not mean we should abandon our livelihood or disregard the needs of this body. What it means is: we should not take worldly gain as the root or sole purpose of practicing the Buddha-Dharma, nor should we turn our practice into a mere tool for chasing worldly name and gain. To live a normal life and to work to support this body is natural, necessary, and entirely proper.

So the key lies in our heart. We fulfill our part: work well, give our honest effort, carry our responsibilities — and at the same time, with a peaceful heart, recite "Namo Amitabha," entrusting the outcome to Amitabha Buddha. Do what is humanly possible, and place success or failure in Amitabha's hands.

In truth, you do not need to anxiously "pray" or bargain with the Buddha. Simply recite "Namo Amitabha" with a peaceful heart. Amitabha Buddha knows all your needs, and will arrange the most fitting conditions for you. When we entrust ourselves wholly to Him, the various needs of this present life are naturally held within Amitabha's vast embrace. Those who recite the Buddha-Name are, at every moment, watched over by Amitabha.

So, recite the Name within your daily life, and live your daily life within recitation — and in this way, both your present life and the life to come are peacefully held within Amitabha Buddha's compassion. Namo Amitabha
