《佛说无量寿经》中记载阿弥陀佛第十八愿：
「设我得佛，十方众生，至心信乐，欲生我国，乃至十念，若不生者，不取正觉。」
我们常念的"南无阿弥陀佛"这六个字，根本来源就是第十八愿。阿弥陀佛能成为诸佛之王，最核心的因缘就是这个超世大愿。
试想：若没有第十八愿，就不会有阿弥陀佛这一尊佛；没有这愿力，世间就不会有称念佛号的法门；失去这个根基，整个净土宗就无从建立；若缺了这根本誓约，我们念多少佛号都失去意义。
而反过来看：正因有了这个誓愿，才诞生了阿弥陀佛；这愿力催生了念佛的胜妙法门；这根基撑起了净土法门的宏伟殿堂；这承诺保证了念佛必定能往生极乐世界。
说到底，我们今日能安心念佛往生净土，全因阿弥陀佛在无量劫前为我们许下的第十八愿。这份亘古不变的承诺，如金刚般永远镌刻在《无量寿经》之中。
In the Infinite Life Sutra, Amitabha Buddha’s 18th Vow is recorded as follows:
"If, when I attain Buddhahood, sentient beings in the ten directions, who sincerely and joyfully entrust themselves to me, and aspire to be born in my land—even if only invoking my Name as few as ten times—should not be born there, may I not attain perfect enlightenment."
The six characters we often chant, "Namo Amituofo" (南无阿弥陀佛), have their fundamental origin in this 18th Vow.
Amitabha Buddha's supreme status as the King of All Buddhas is rooted in this transcendental Vow.
Think about it:
Without the 18th Vow, Amitabha Buddha would not exist;
without this Vow, the method of reciting the Buddha’s Name would not have arisen in the world;
without this foundational cause, the entire Pure Land tradition could not have been established;
without this fundamental pledge, no matter how much we recite the Buddha's Name, it would all lose its true meaning.
Conversely, precisely because of this Vow:
Amitabha Buddha was born;
this Vow gave rise to the supreme method of Nianfo (reciting the Buddha’s Name);
this foundation supports the magnificent edifice of the Pure Land Dharma Door;
this pledge ensures that reciting the Buddha's Name will certainly result in rebirth in the Land of Ultimate Bliss.
Ultimately, it is solely because of the 18th Vow that we can, today, recite the Buddha’s Name with complete assurance and aspire to be born in the Pure Land. This everlasting pledge, made countless kalpas ago, is eternally inscribed in the Infinite Life Sutra.
