New Year Reflection on the Sixth Day | 2026.02.22

初六,是良辰;

六字,是归依;

六方,是护念;

未必事事如意;

六字常称,六方常护;

Today is the sixth day of the Lunar New Year. In popular tradition, people often say “Six Six, everything goes smoothly.” Yet in the hearts of those who recite the Buddha’s Name, there is a deeper meaning.

I would like to share these four simple lines of blessing:

Auspicious Sixth Day,

Six-Character Great Name;

Protected by the Buddhas of the Six Directions,

Six Periods of the day, all auspicious.

The “Six-Character Great Name” is this very phrase—Namo Amitabha.

Six syllables, neither more nor less, yet containing immeasurable light, immeasurable life, and immeasurable merit.

On this sixth day, when we recite these six sacred syllables, we resonate with the Buddhas of the Six Directions. The sutras often speak of “the Buddhas of the Six Directions offering protection and mindfulness.” When we chant the Buddha’s Name, the Buddhas of the East, West, South, North, Above, and Below join in praise and extend their compassionate protection.

“Six periods of auspiciousness” refers to the six divisions of day and night—dawn, midday, sunset, early night, midnight, and late night—every hour peaceful, every moment embraced by the Buddha’s light. It is not about waiting for good fortune to arrive; this very Name itself is the truest and most genuine blessing.

The Sixth Day is an auspicious moment;

The Six Characters are our refuge;

The Six Directions offer protection;

The Six Periods bring peace.

If during this New Year we can settle this Buddha’s Name in our hearts, then when we go out, the Name accompanies us; when we are at home, the Buddha’s light abides with us. In favorable circumstances, we are not deluded; in adversity, we remain unshaken.

The “smoothness” sought in the world

does not always mean everything goes as wished;

the “smoothness” gained through Buddha-recitation

is peace and ease within the heart.

May all of you in the coming year

constantly recite the Six Characters,

ever protected in the Six Directions;

peace throughout the Six periods of the day,

and year after year filled with light.

Namo Amitabha
