Amid Physical Suffering, How Can One Recite the Name with a Peaceful Heart?
Master Jingben Answers: Namo Amitabha Buddha. To know that you are bearing the discomfort of a cervical condition, that your body is unwell and your heart is gripped by fear and worry — these feelings are altogether human, and entirely understandable. Please do not on this account think that your faith is insufficient, or that your recitation is somehow not good enough.
In truth, the faith of recitation does not arise from our own power; it rests upon the power of Amitabha Buddha’s Vow. It is not that Amitabha comes to save us only when our faith is sufficient — rather, Amitabha has been protecting and embracing us all along, never once leaving us. We need only recite the Name.
It is like a child who falls ill — frightened, crying — yet a mother does not abandon her child because of the fear and tears. On the contrary, she feels all the more tender, and holds the child all the more closely. So it is with Amitabha Buddha: the more we are gripped by fear, the more unsettled we feel, the more compassionately does Amitabha embrace and protect us.
So when fear arises, recite the Name. When worry arises, recite the Name. There is no need to wait until the heart is calm before reciting. The recitation itself is the deepest peace.
As for the body, please follow your doctor’s treatment well and take good care of yourself.
In this Saha world, sickness and suffering are unavoidable. It is precisely because of this that we come to appreciate all the more the preciousness of being born in the Pure Land through recitation. As the ancients said: “A true practitioner always carries a measure of illness” — for sickness keeps us humble and ever mindful. In the Land of Ultimate Bliss there is no sickness, no worry — only pure and tranquil joy. This single Name, “Namo Amitabha Buddha,” is our assurance of passage to the Pure Land.
Please recite the Name with a peaceful heart, and entrust everything to Amitabha Buddha. Amitabha has been by your side all along, and has never left. Namo Amitabha Buddha.
