Disrespectful Thoughts About the Three Jewels — Am I Possessed?
Master Jingben Answers: Namo Amitabha Buddha. I understand that these sudden thoughts have left you deeply unsettled. Please first set your heart at ease — this is not one of the Five Heinous Sins, nor is it possession. There is no need to fear.
Firstly, the Five Heinous Sins refer to actual deeds, not to thoughts that flash through the mind. You have not committed any disrespectful act toward the Three Jewels; you have only had thoughts flash by. This does not constitute one of the Five Heinous Sins. Please be at ease.
Secondly, the arising of such thoughts is actually a very normal phenomenon. The minds of us ordinary beings are by nature filled with countless wandering thoughts, coming and going beyond our control. These thoughts are habit-energies from beginningless time — you are not actively producing them; they arise on their own. Like clouds in the sky, drifting in and drifting out — we need not grasp at them, nor try to chase them away. They will naturally dissolve.
Moreover, it is precisely because you are reciting the Name that these stray thoughts become easier to notice. Imagine a room: in the dimness, the dust is invisible; the moment sunlight streams in, every speck of dust appears. The sunlight did not bring the dust — the dust was always there, only unnoticed. Recitation is that sunlight, allowing you to see the wandering thoughts that were always there.
Furthermore, the very fact that you clearly recognise these as bad thoughts and feel uneasy about them shows that you are not possessed. Those who are truly possessed do not perceive that there is any problem with themselves.
So what should you do? It is very simple — pay them no mind. When the thoughts come, let them come. Do not analyse them, do not fight them, do not blame yourself. The more you dwell on them, the more they will return. Relax, ignore them, and continue reciting your "Namo Amitabha Buddha." Let the Buddha-Name replace the wandering thoughts. Over time, these thoughts will naturally fade and dissolve on their own.
Please recite the Name with a peaceful heart. Amitabha Buddha will not abandon you over a few wandering thoughts that flash through your mind. Amitabha's compassion never holds such things against us — so long as you continue to recite, Amitabha's embrace has never once left you. Namo Amitabha Buddha
