My Family Dislikes the Buddha-Name Played Aloud — What Should I Do?
Master Jingben Answers: Namo Amitabha Buddha. Your wish for your family to also hear the Name is a beautiful intention.
However, since your family has expressed their discomfort, we should respect what they feel. Each person's receptivity is different — some prefer quiet, some are sensitive to sound, some have not yet ripened the karmic conditions to encounter the Dharma. All of this is entirely natural. There is no need to simply explain their discomfort as "dissolving karmic obstacles" — doing so only adds unnecessary pressure to both yourself and them.
More importantly, if we force our family to listen, it may instead cause them to develop an aversion toward the Buddha-Name — the very opposite of what we hoped for. That would be a great pity.
Switching to headphones was a very good decision — neither disturbing your family, nor disturbing your own peaceful recitation.
In truth, what we live often speaks louder than what we say. As you yourself recite the Name well, your family will see that recitation makes you more peaceful, more joyful. With time, they will naturally grow curious — and when the conditions ripen, they will naturally come to receive it.
So please do not be discouraged. Continue to recite well yourself, and in your heart you may also dedicate the recitation to your family. Amitabha Buddha's compassionate light is not limited to whether the Name is played aloud or through headphones — every single recitation of yours, Amitabha will use to arrange the most fitting conditions to benefit your family.
