After Taking Refuge — How Should I Practice at Home?
Could you please let me know if there is an official daily home liturgy (such as a morning and evening chanting program, or specific opening and closing verses) that I should follow before my home altar while reciting the Name? Kindly request Master's guidance. Namo Amitabha Buddha.
Master Jingben Answers: Namo Amitabha Buddha. I rejoice in your taking Refuge. You are very mindful to ask about daily practice of reciting the Name.
First, please set your heart at ease: reciting the Name does not actually require any special liturgy — it can be recited anytime, anywhere. This is precisely what makes the path of reciting the Name the most convenient, the most supreme practice.
If you wish to have a regular morning and evening practice, you may arrange it like this: first, offer three prostrations before the Buddha image; next, recite Master Shan-dao's "Gatha of Praise for Amitabha Buddha"; then begin reciting the Name; and finally, dedicate the merit. The duration of morning and evening recitation may be set at half an hour, or one hour — whichever fits your own schedule.
Master Shan-dao's "Gatha of Praise for Amitabha Buddha"
Amitabha Buddha's body is like golden mountains, which illuminate his Buddha light to all the worlds. Only those who recite his name Namo Amituofo are embraced by his light, because his Fundamental Vow brings out the most powerful karmic connection. Buddhas of all the worlds extend their tongues to attest that: by reciting "Namo Amituofo" exclusively, all sentient beings will arrive at the Land of Bliss. Once born there in a blooming lotus, one can listen to wondrous Dharma teachings. The aspiration and practices of all Bodhisattva stages manifest naturally.
Dedication
May the merits from Amitabha Buddha, be bestowed upon all sentient beings without discrimination. May all beings awaken to the bodhi mind, be reborn in the Land of Bliss. Namo Amituofo.
As for other times, whenever you have a free moment — whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down — you may recite "Namo Amitabha Buddha" at any time, allowing the Buddha-Name to permeate every moment of daily life.
May you recite the Name with a peaceful heart, joyful and at ease, bathed in the compassionate light of Amitabha. Namo Amitabha Buddha
